Being diagnosed with cancer is the beginning of what can be a long, overwhelming and frightening journey for patients. Traveling to new medical facilities, engaging with doctors and trying to absorb a host of new information is mentally stressful. Experiencing medical testing, treatment, and the side effects of treatment is physically taxing. For patients, and for their caregivers, the cancer experience is likely one of the most stressful events of their lives. Massage can help patients and their families deal with the stress and anxiety associated with cancer.
Anyone who has ever had a bad headache or migraine understands just how debilitating the pain can be. The pain of headaches and migraines can make even everyday tasks next to impossible. It’s in all the newspapers lately, it’s making the talk show circuit, it’s the subject of numerous research studies - no, it’s not Lady Gaga’s fashion phenom. It’s vitamin D! So, what is all the hype lately? It’s just another vitamin in a long list of the alphabet soup of nutrients the body needs to sustain itself, right? Well, actually, vitamin D has been found to be much more important than once thought. The “sunshine vitamin”, as it is lovingly called due to the body’s ability to make it from sunlight, is needed for so much more than just keeping our bones healthy.

If you are a New Englander, you love summertime! Increased activities outdoors, working around the home, and expanding our variety of exercises is all part of fun and what we look forward to all year! Along with all these new things to do, comes the extra pressure and strain on your back and body. The fatigue and stress these new activities place on your body can lead to all sorts of problems and injuries. Chiropractic can help you recover from these problems more quickly and can also help to prevent these problems from occurring.

Physical preparation itself, in my opinion, is running a close parallel to the fitness industry. I had the great pleasure of speaking to a group of High School athletes recently. We all agreed that, much like the fitness industry during the boom years, any type of training would yield a result. In earlier times an athlete could simply “outwork” his or her opponent by “doing more”. As a result, over the years, this paradigm resulted in a linear increase in the amount of work performed by an athlete. The answer was always “more, more, more”. More mileage, more lifting, more speed. The challenge is we are a biological system where the system can easily override itself where it eventually breaks down.

Traveling this summer? Plane rides or out on a boat? Pericardium 6, or PC6, is good for motion sickness, nausea and vomiting. It is also helpful at calming the mind and reducing anxiety and nervousness. Putting some gentle pressure or massage at this point can help alleviate these symptoms or keep them from coming on. It can be easily located at three fingers-width above the wrist crease between the tendons. See a larger scale of the picture at this link. -
Nothing is better on a hot summer day than a cold popsicle. But, if you are like me, you prefer your icy treats without things like Red #5, Yellow #6 and high fructose corn syrup. Happily, I have these delicious ice pop recipes to share with you from Moosewood Restaurant Cooking for Health by the Moosewood Collective.
